Students came out in large numbers to support Franciscan University of Steubenville men’s and women’s soccer teams Saturday, Oct. 9, at a tailgate event in Finnegan Fieldhouse courtyard and on the rugby field.

The first Baron Blast began with a beer garden following the 11 a.m. Mass where students mingled with friends. Snow cones, chips and candy were also available. There was even a special appearance made by the Baron von Steuben mascot.

The tailgate was on the rugby field during the men’s and women’s soccer games against St. Vincent College Bearcats at 1 p.m. and 3:15 p.m. The Barons and Lady Barons both won their games, the men winning 4-1 and the women winning 2-0.

Burgers, hot dogs, chips and drinks were served for free as people lined the hill above the turf field to watch the soccer game. This encouraged a large crowd of spectators, with over 200 students and family members present to enjoy the food and the games.

The crowd was lively, with people cheering and attempting “the wave.”

After the Barons won 4-0, the women’s soccer team started out strong, with a few shots taken before a downpour started. Because of the rain, many people left the game or stood in the shed to watch. Most of the other fans left during a half-hour delay for lightning. When the game reconvened, the Lady Barons claimed the game with a score of 2-0.

This is the first time the university has sponsored a tailgate event like this.

Peter Rosaschi, men’s lacrosse coach, helped run the event. He said, “I’m glad it was such a success. We are planning on doing this one more time in the fall and two times in the spring for lacrosse games.”

Junior Abby Olis said, “I got free food, a free T-shirt and free entertainment. What more could I ask for?”
