The Franciscan University of Steubenville men’s soccer team lost to Grove City College Wednesday at 5 p.m. with a close score of 2-1.
Both teams battled hard in the first half of the game with many close calls, but no one scored. This gave the Barons the second half to see if they could secure a win.
Grove City College scored in the first few minutes of the second half, giving the game a score of 1-0.
Senior forward Mikey Irvin scored for the Barons shortly afterward. This created a big commotion in the crowd. Franciscan students gave a large cheer as the game was tied 1-1.
The game continued with Franciscan and Grove City both fighting hard to keep the other from scoring.
However, in the last minutes of the game, Grove City scored a goal, making the final score 2-1.
Despite this disappointment for the Barons, head coach Brent Ridenour offered free pizza for fans who sat directly across the field from the Barons’ soccer bench. Many students crowded around to get pizza.
After the game, Ridenour said, “Grove City is an excellent team and they simply outplayed us today. I am happy that we kept working hard despite not playing our best. I know we will learn from this game and continue to improve and get ready for our next game.”
The next home game for the Barons will be Saturday at 3 p.m. against Chatham University at Trinity Health System Field.
