Franciscan University of Steubenville’s women’s volleyball hosted a double header to open up their season on Aug. 31.

The Barons began with a nailbiter against Hollins University. Starting out with a lead after the first set with Elizabeth Luebbers leading the way. This resulted in a score of 25-16 with Franciscan having the upper hand.

Unfortunately, they were unable to keep this streak and lost the next set 15-25.

In the third set, the two shining stars were Angela Sweeney with three kills and Mary Smart with her ace. Franciscan’s fight with the help of these two ladies was not enough to pull through and they lost the set 25-22. With the score now being 1-2, the victory would go to Hollins if they won the following set.

The Barons knew this and were not going to let their opponent take the win so easily. Ava King encouraged her teammates to victory after serving an ace. They pushed through and won the set 25-10.

With confidence being built back up after winning the previous set, the Barons were ready to fight. While they did not win the set, Franciscan gave Hollins a run for their money. The set ended with Hollins being the victor with a score of 20-18.

Next, Franciscan had a match against Westminster. The Barons fought hard at this game as well but did not come out as victors with a closing score of 0-3 with Westminster triumphing.

Franciscan fought hard in the first match but was unable to prevail and lost 17-25. The second and third matches were both the same story with their scores coming out to be 16-25 and 14-25.

One of the key players from the games was Mary Jean Cadman with 14 kills and one block in the first game and seven kills and one block in the second game.

Sara Moore was also an important player from the matches with three assists and 20 digs the first game and two aces and 16 digs the second game.

Mary Smart was another key player with 20 assists and 11 digs in the first game and one ace and 12 assists in the second game. There were many more stunning players out on the court as well.
