The Franciscan University women’s volleyball team beat the Waynesburg Yellow Jackets in a home game Wed, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m.
This win gave the Lady Barons an 11-9 record in the Presidents Athletic Conference placing them seventh overall.
The Barons and Yellow Jackets rallied back in forth in the first set but soon saw the Yellow Jackets taking the early lead.
The Barons showed control early in the first set but were unable to find an answer to the Yellow Jacket’s offense and lost the first set 25- 18.
The Barons fell behind the Yellow Jackets at the beginning of the second set and recovered when sophomore outside hitter Gabrielle Disselkamp made a great dive resulting with the score 5- 4 for a short time.
The second set went much like the first with a lot of back-and-forth, but ultimately the Yellow Jackets edging out the Barons 25- 21.
Down 2-0 in the series and on the Brink of defeat, the Barons powered through to the third set. Disselkamp responded to the Yellow Jackets 17- 11 lead with a spike, starting the Baron comeback.
Disselkamp continued aiding the Barons and served back to back aces contributing to the Barons win, 25- 22 in the third set.
The Barons continued to make a comeback in the fourth set when they took the 3- 0 lead.
The Barons were tied with the Yellow Jackets when sophomore middle hitter Gracie Francis made a kill and the Barons won the fourth set 25- 19.
Disselkamp aided the Barons in the fifth set with five more kills and the Barons continued their stride, maintaining their endurance defeating the Yellow Jackets 15- 5 in the fifth set.
“The only thing that changed going into the fifth set was that mental toughness,” head coach Sean Cleary said.
The Barons next home game is Saturday Oct. 28 at 11 a.m. against Washington and Jefferson College in the Finnegan Fieldhouse.
