Franciscan University’s annual Household Olympics drew in students, staff and visitors to the green intramural field on Saturday, Sept. 7, to witness various sporting events, including frisbee games, a can toss and a human wheelbarrow race.
This year’s trophies were triumphantly carried off the field by the women’s household Crown of Creation and men’s household Defenders of Purity.
Alyssa Mondarez, a member of Crowns, referred to her household’s victory as “an honor” and mentioned that “(Saturday) was the first time Crown of Creation won the Olympics during my time at the university, despite a close attempt two years before.”
Mondarez said her household “Did especially well working together and focusing on our individual strengths.”
Graduate student and member of the Office of Evangelization Katie Zickert said the Olympics were “a very successful event …. Everyone was having a lot of fun.”
As a first-time referee for the event, Zickert mentioned she “had fun watching the Rev. Vincent Yeager, TOR, beat his fellow friars in a friendly can toss competition.” Zickert also enjoyed seeing the opposing teams come together to rally each other on and described the Olympics as “a good, unifying opportunity to meet other people and households.”
The lively atmosphere was filled with cheers and laughter as participants showcased their skills and sportsmanship in true Franciscan fashion.
