Finnegan Fieldhouse was buzzing with excitement on Oct. 11 as students gathered for Oktoberfest: an evening of German food, live music and fellowship organized by Student Engagement. The event began at 5 p.m. and lasted until 9 p.m.
Hundreds crowded the celebration, with a huge line of students waiting to use their meal swipes for a German dinner. The meal, served buffet-style, included German staples like schnitzel (a pork dish), schmorkohl (cabbage boiled in beef broth) and käsespätzle (dumplings with cheese and onions).
After loading their plates, students sat down at long tables scattered around the fieldhouse, cheerfully decorated with string lights and blue checkered tablecloths. They enjoyed their food and chatted with friends.
“The food was good,” said freshman Ellie Lewis, and many students concurred.
Another highlight of the evening was the live music. A polka band performed from the fieldhouse stage, playing energetic instrumental songs and even a few dances. The chicken dance, in particular, was a hit. When a band member directed students to form a circle for the chicken dance, dozens dropped everything and sprinted toward the stage.
The music was freshman Anna Offsay’s favorite part of Oktoberfest. “The band was really interactive with the crowd, getting people up front to do the chicken dance and other fun dances,” she shared. She enjoyed spinning, clapping and laughing with her friends during the chaotic dance.
On their way out, many students stopped to grab a German dessert. Sweet treats included Schwarwalder Kirschtorte (Black Forest chocolate cupcakes) and Linzertorte, a powdered sugar-sprinkled tart with cherry filling.
Freshman Claire Benson was enthusiastic about the event. “It was fabulous!” she said. “The food and music were so fun. I had a great time getting to do something different, and it was exciting to enjoy the energy of so many people.” She loved celebrating Oktoberfest surrounded by her friends.
Judging by the conversation and laughter that filled the fieldhouse all evening, Oktoberfest was a joyful gathering for many students.
