Franciscan women’s volleyball team falls to Baldwin Wallace University

The Lady Barons volleyball team lost 3-1 against the Baldwin Wallace Yellow Jackets at the first official match of the season Wednesday.

The Lady Barons started off strong in the first set. Senior setter Emily Nutter’s serves gave the Lady Barons an early 7-0 lead.

Senior middle hitter Maria Bosco furthered the Lady Barons’ early lead with her first ace of the match. The Lady Barons won the first set 25-16.

The Yellow Jackets had a hot start to the second set. Despite the Lady Barons’ 4-0 lead, the Yellow Jackets won the set 25-14.

The Yellow Jackets began the third set with a 7-0 run. Senior outside hitter Renee Antonelli and freshman middle hitter Lucy Pridemore both had kills that tightened up the score.

Freshman defensive specialist Sara Moore scored the first ace of her career. In spite of the Lady Barons’ efforts, the Yellow Jackets closed the third set 25-15.

The Lady Barons had an early 4-0 lead in the fourth set. The Lady Barons and the Yellow Jackets rallied back and forth throughout the set. The Yellow Jackets ultimately prevailed, bringing the fourth set’s final score to 25-22.

“I think that for our first showing we played really well,” said Jordan Barton, the Lady Barons’ head coach. “I think this is a great test for our girls, and it not only showed a lot of strengths but a lot of weaknesses, too. I absolutely loved the fight that we had.”

The Lady Barons’ next home game will be against the Thiel College Tomcats on Sept. 18 in the Finnegan Fieldhouse.
