Franciscan University Student Government passed a series of bills confirming new staff and allocating funds at its weekly meeting on Oct. 4 at 11 a.m. in the St. Leo Room in the J.C. Williams Center.
Senators passed a series of bills to confirm members of the executive staff.
Fall Bill 5 confirmed junior Ryan Kay to the position of justice on the FUSG Supreme Court.
Fall 6 confirmed George Meyers as executive assistant. Fall Bill 7 confirmed senior Frances Langley as chief of staff.
Fall Bill 10 confirmed sophomore Chris Karroum to the position of director of ministries.
Fall Bill 8 confirmed Nicholas Patryn as FUSG’s new vice president.
Patryn stated that former Vice President Celine Najm has resigned. Najm informed The Troubadour that her resignation is due to a personal family matter.
Patryn said that he would be sworn into his position within the next week.
Justice Ryan Kay swore in freshmen Jacob Leerkes as freshmen senator.
The senate also passed Fall Bill 13, which reappropriated $100 from the Tolkien Society’s sub-budgets to allow them to purchase Lord of the Rings board games for an upcoming collaborative event between Tolkien Society and Board Game Club.
The senate passed Fall Bill 15, which allocated $237.84 to FUSG to buy donuts for Student Government on the Hill event.
Senators also elected senior Sen. Jacob Smith to the position of senate majority leader by a vote of 6-5 over Sen. Joseph Pendergast.
Smith was not in attendance at the meeting.
During the president’s comments, in the absence of Pres. Gabe Denley, who was not present due to a personal matter, Executive Assistant George Meyers spoke to the senators regarding the Capital Campaign press conference.
“Although I was initially against going to the press conference, we are now going, and I think it’s a good first step in order to work with the administration in the future in getting what we want and what we know the students want,” said Meyers.
“I went to the press conference right before this and it is looks like it was mostly just going to be higher ups speaking. They definitely weren’t going to let student government speak, as some of us predicted,” added Sen. Sammons.
Sammons continued, “The better thing is Dentino being able to hear our concerns and future meetings that the president and vice president should have with Father Dave.”
Sophomore Sen. Veronica MacDonald made the motion to adjourn the meeting.
