Franciscan University Student Government (FUSG) passed funding for clubs, denied funding for the Verso Alto hiking club and discussed Senate committees in their meeting on Oct. 18 at 11 a.m.
The Senate first discussed Fall Bill 19, which allocated funds for the Verso Alto hiking club.
The club requested money to reimburse members who paid out of pocket to drive to their first hike and pay for three additional hikes this semester, but the club could only provide receipts from one of its drivers.
After some senators objected to the cost of the bill, the bill failed to pass.
The Senate discussed Fall Bill 20, which allocated $60.70 for the Faith, Family and Smash Bro’s club to buy pizza.
Senate Majority Leader Jacob Smith suggested the club buy pizza from Domino’s to reduce costs. Club Pres. Caleb Welker agreed.
Sophomore Sen. Veronica MacDonald motioned to amend the bill to $42 to buy six pizzas for $6.99 each.
The amendment and the bill passed unanimously.
The Senate passed Fall Bill 21, which allocated $256 to the Language Learning club to cover snacks and other needs of the Language Learning Café on the second floor of Egan Hall.
The Senate also passed Fall Bill 22, which allocated $97 to fund a Day of the Dead celebration sponsored by the Language Learning club.
Smith asked the club Pres. Grace McKeegan to guarantee no “Santa Muerte skulls” would be present at the celebration.
McKeegan said she would ensure that nothing objectionable would be present at the celebration.
During the president’s comments, FUSG Pres. Gabe Denley said he is getting the Senate legislative committees up and running.
Denley said, “The committees offer a way in which the Senate can have a lower level of subsidiary and have their own project unto themselves, without the executive’s oversight in a way.”
Denley also said that Senate Majority Leader Jacob Smith is finishing committee assignments.
During comments for the good of the order, Director of Ministry Chris Karroum said that Rev. Shawn Roberson, TOR, is ill, so the schola holy hour planned for Wed., Oct. 18 is canceled.
