The entirety of the J.C. Williams center was packed from floor to ceiling March 1. Students stood in line for hours just to have a spot on the floor or a stool to stand on to watch the annual event of the household Guardians of the Divine Will lip sync battle. This year the Guardians invited six other households to go head-to-head with in acts of talent and hilarity.
The Fishers of Men started off the evening of competition with a stellar performance of Dolly Parton’s “9 to 5.” Their performance got the crowd of students excited with fun story line and little household jokes only Franciscan students would understand.
The Guardians intents answered this competition with an accurate rendition of “Kung-Fu Fighting,” including the actual breaking of boards. These two jaw dropping performances ended in a tie, with the cheers of students eventually showing favor to the Fishers of Men household.
Moving to the next round, the Crowns of Creation created a mind-boggling acrobatic routine. The Guardians did their best to beat this dance down with a sassy performance of “Dance the Night” by Dua Lipa, full of moves the Barbie herself would be jealous of. Alas, nothing could beat the creative choreography of the Crowns.
Disciples of the Word then blew the spectators away with a rendition of “Room Where it Happens” from the hit musical Hamilton. This dramatic routine was full of story, attitude, choreography and original lyrics. “This performance was headline material,” says senior English major Kasia Kalinski.
After these faithful Disciples launched their coordinators into the audience, it was difficult for Guardians to follow with their routine “Treasure.” Totus Tuus Maria followed with a totally terrific routine full of quick costume changes and groovy dances.
Not to be outdone, the Guardians presented a dramatic and theatrical performance of Imagine Dragons’ “Bones.” Calling the act Memento Mori brought favor to the dance for a crowd of Catholics, and with the incredible choreography, this dance won over the judges.
The only returning guests of the evening were the Handmaids of the Lord. Their act was full of jaw dropping stunts, phenomenal dance routines and even guest appearances of Pitbull and Dolly Parton. Unfortunately, these amazing Handmaids were out performed by the Guardians’ Phineas and Ferb dance.
The final showdown of the night was the Guardians’ seniors dancing against Seraphic Valor. Both acts were full of fun and energetic entertainment and lots of laughs. In the end, the Guardians won this round as well, ending the night with a total of three wins.
Before an epic after party, students joined the Guardians in prayer, asking for Our Lady’s intercession in all of Franciscan’s unique households and the community of the university.
