The Fireside Lounge was filled with quotes from Aquinas, Plato, Scotus and many more were tossed around by philosophy professor Alex Plato, classics professors Jospeh Almeida and associate professor of classics Theodore Harwood in an intellectual debate on numerous different topics.
The afternoon began with the contemplation on the question: what is a thought? A variety of philosophies and opinions were brought up of which were highly too intellectual for an average college student to grasp. All in all, this showed the true intellectual genius in the faculty found at Franciscan University.
Though the professors used highly academic language, iconic moments highlighted the uniqueness of the evening. On the topic of language and its value, Almeida stated, “no particular translation of a language can fully articulate its concepts.” The movie Arrival was brought up during this topic of which Harwood remarked that in it, “language is the hero.”
A lot of thought-provoking themes and ideas were shared amongst the 20-30 students who like sponges soaked up all of the wisdom shared that afternoon.
Plato commented, “genius is a form of mysterious capacity of a human being that intrigues the human person.” Though he mentioned in light of other highly intellectual scholars, the sentiment was shared by all the students in awe of the depth of knowledge each professor had.
Though a detailed explanation of How to be Human(e) was never presented, the night did show how rationality and intellect are a crucial part of the human identity. It is in nights like these, with conversations such as these, that one discovers being human resides in conversation and thought.
