The Lady Barons put up a fight during their game against Waynesburg University Yellow Jackets Saturday at 1 p.m., ultimately losing 68-48.
The Lady Barons started out strong when freshman guard Jazzlyn Melnyk scored a layup 12 seconds into the game, giving Franciscan the initial lead.
However, due to Waynesburg’s free throws, they gained an advantage soon. At that stage, Waynesburg had shot 23-26; 88% of shots were made compared to total attempts. Franciscan shot 13-22, 59%, by that point.
At the end of the first quarter, the score was 15-11 Waynesburg.
Throughout the second quarter, Franciscan made two layups, followed by two free throws. Both free throws were scored by sophomore forward Sophie LaRose, ending the second quarter with a score of 37-20 Waynesburg.
The Lady Barons began the third quarter with freshman center Madison Doan scoring a jump shot 15 seconds in and another about halfway through the quarter. Franciscan made seven more points toward the end of the quarter, bringing the end of the quarter to 56-31 Waynesburg.
In the final quarter, the Lady Barons made 17 points. Freshmen guards Ilena Gonzales and Felicia MacGillivray each made 3-pointers.
Freshman guard Lauren Arena made the final shot of the game that ended in a 68-48 defeat for the Lady Barons.
“We did really well in the first quarter,” said sophomore guard Victoria Unnerstall, who is out for the season due to an injury. “The effort in the last quarter was contagious, especially in the fourth quarter with our defense.”
Unnerstall said, “We never gave up. We fought throughout the whole game. We may have lost, but this is still an opportunity for growth.”
The women’s basketball team played their next home game against the St. Vincent College Bearcats Monday, Jan. 31, and lost 70-54.
