The Franciscan women’s basketball team fell to the Westminster College Titans 61-45 in a home game Saturday at 2 p.m.
A large crowd of spectators came to watch the Lady Barons and to celebrate the annual Kuzma Day.
Franciscan and Westminster had a slow start to the game but quickly began to pick up the pace.
Freshman center Madison Doan scored four points in the first quarter. In the second quarter, freshman guard Felicia MacGillivray scored a 3-pointer.
Doan also scored a jumper in the second quarter. Freshman guard Jazzlyn Melnyk scored a 3-pointer. However, Westminster stayed ahead of Franciscan, and the first half ended with Franciscan behind 32-18.
The Lady Barons had an aggressive start to the second half. Near the start of the third quarter, the Lady Barons had a 5-1 run which helped narrow the gap between Franciscan and Westminster. Later in the quarter, Doan led a 12-0 run which put the Lady Barons four points behind Westminster.
Westminster came back strongly, and the Lady Barons were shut out for some of the fourth quarter. Freshman guard Ilena Gonzales broke them out of the fourth quarter with a pair of free throws. Gonzales also scored a 3-pointer.
The Lady Barons efforts were not enough, and the team lost to Westminster 61-45.
Game highlights include Doan being the highest scorer of the game with 18 points. Freshman forward Kimberly McDaniels had the most rebounds of the game with 10 rebounds. Melnyk had the greatest number of assists for the game with seven assists.
Other highlights included Lady Barons shooting 75% of their shots from the free throw line. The Lady Barons rebounded Westminster 44-41.
The Lady Barons will next play Geneva College at a home game Wednesday at 6 p.m.
