The Lady Barons basketball team suffered an 86-75 defeat against the Geneva College Golden Tornadoes on Saturday at 2 p.m.
The game started with the Tornadoes taking a 6-point lead. That initial streak was broken by a layup from sophomore center Madison Doan, followed by a 3-pointer from sophomore guard Chiara MacGillivray.
The Tornadoes continued to pull ahead, amassing another nine-point streak. Afterward, the two teams began to trade points more evenly.
The quarter ended with a defensive rebound from sophomore guard Jazzlyn Melnyk. That opportunity allowed freshman forward Giuliana Biasutto to sink a good jump shot, assisted by freshman guard Kylie Panizza.
By the end of the first quarter, the Tornadoes were up 24-15. The second quarter saw less scoring action, but the Lady Barons were about to score 13 more points, as opposed to the Tornadoes’ 12.
The third quarter was much more closely contested. The Lady Barons earned a six-point streak, resulting from two good free throws each from MacGillivray and Panizza, as well as a jump shot from sophomore guard Lauren Arena following a steal. Both teams scored 24 points during the quarter.
The third quarter ended with the Lady Barons hot on the Tornadoes’ trail, 60-52. It was a decisive quarter, but the trailing Lady Barons were only able to come within six points of the Tornadoes, 79-73.
The Lady Barons attempted to keep up with the Tornadoes, scoring a handful of jump shots throughout the quarter. Panizza scored the only 3-pointer of the quarter.
The game closed with a firm win for the Tornadoes at 86-75.
Highlights from the game included MacGillivray scoring 21 points, marking her second time scoring 20 or more points this season.
Melnyk earned 10 assists, earning her an eighth-place spot on Franciscan’s career assists record list.
