The Franciscan women’s basketball team suited up against the Thiel Bobcats in a thrilling 89-53 win on Jan. 20 at 1 p.m.

The win snapped the Lady Baron’s 12-game losing streak, hopefully igniting a late season run.

The Lady Barons started the game off hot, scoring 11 unanswered points. They were led by freshman forward Maria McCallen with a couple of layups.

Junior guard Ilena Gonzales led the Barons on an 8-0 scoring run assisted by sophomore guards Caroline Reedy and Emma Clow to put the Barons up 19-3 in the first quarter. The Barons finished out the first quarter leading 21-9.

The Lady Barons and Bobcats traded basket-for-basket, bringing the score to 36-23 late in the second quarter.

Freshman Mikayla Doan exploded on the offensive end in the third quarter, making full use of height advantage over the smaller Bobcats. Reedy, Gonzalez and Clow assisted Doan to build a 27-point lead, making the score 61-34 Barons.

Reedy, Doan and Gonzalez helped the Lady Barons put the game away in the fourth quarter, combing for 19 of the Lady Barons’ 28 points in the quarter.

Clow hit a couple of free throws to tie and then extend Franciscan’s scoring record to 87 total points in a single game. McCallen made a layup in the closing seconds to end the game 89-53.

Notable performances came from Reedy with a season high of 22 points. Doan and Gonzales were just behind with 19 and 18 points, respectively.

Doan also led the team with 17 rebounds for a double-double. The Barons overall dominated the paint, outscoring Thiel 56-16 in it.
