Lady Barons ’ Defense shows through against top seeded Presidents

The Franciscan University women’s basketball team lost to the President’s Athletic Conference top team, the Washington and Jefferson Presidents 48-72 on Jan. 31 at 5:30 p.m. 

The Lady Barons held the one seed to 12 points in the first quarter led by the freshmen forwards, Maria McCallen and Mikayla Doan. McCallen led the team with two blocks in the quarter and Doan had a key steal at the end of the quarter.  

Down 4-12 heading into the second quarter, sophomore forward Giuliana Biasutto led the team on a comeback with a couple of three-pointers and a jumper to cut the lead to seven, 23-16. 

Sophomore guard, Caroline Reedy, and McCallen combined for eight points in the first half of the second quarter to cut the lead to five, 25-20. 

The Presidents weathered the Barons’ comeback attempt and increased their lead to 13 by the end of the second quarter, making the game 37-24 at the half. 

The offensive struggle hit the Lady Barons again in the third quarter, scoring only 10 points to the Presidents’ 20. 

The Presidents’ speed, agility and skill overwhelmed the Barons as they were down 25 heading into the fourth quarter, 59-24. 

The Lady Barons found their defensive prowess again in the fourth quarter holding the Presidents to 13 points. 

Junior guard, Ilena Gonzalez made her presence known, hitting a key jumper and free-throw. 

Reedy, McCallen, Doan and Biasutto all contributed in the final quarter, but the Presidents came out on top 72-48. 

McCallen led the team with 15 points and two blocks, as she continues to have an impressive freshman season.  

Biasutto was right behind her with 14 points, helping the Barons during their second quarter run. 

The Lady Barons next game will be at the Westminster Titans on Feb. 7 at 6 p.m.
