Lady Barons Edge Out Presidents in Final Set

The Franciscan University women’s volleyball team defeated the Washington and Jefferson Presidents 3-2 in a home game on Oct. 28 at 11 a.m.

Sophomore outside hitter Gabrielle Disselkamp made her presence known with an early spike that resulted in a kill in the first set.

Senior setter Grace Wallace assisted senior outside hitter Mary Jean Cadman for a spike cutting the Presidents’ lead to seven.

The Presidents responded by going on a streak of their own until Junior libero Sara Moore assisted Cadman for another spike and the Barons’ eighth point of the game. The Presidents remained unphased and took the first set 25-15.

Graduate middle hitter Rani Herbert and Disselkamp started the second set off hot helping the Barons to a 5-1 lead at the beginning of the second set.

Wallace set up sophomore right-side Annelise Davis for a spike extending the Barons’ lead 7- 3.

The Barons continued to apply pressure on the Presidents’ defense and Freshman hitter Tessa Miller tipped the ball over the net giving the Barons a 22- 12 lead.

Disselkamp helped close out the set with an ace and a Baron victory 25-14

Disselkamp continued her ace streak into the third set which aided the Barons with a 7-5 lead.

Wallace assisted Davis for another kill in the third set giving the Barons a 24-17 lead.

The Barons won the third set 25- 17.

The Presidents’ offense looked fresh and ready to go in the fourth set, quickly gaining a 3-1 lead over the Barons.

Wallace assisted Davis for a spike cutting the Presidents’ lead to three, 7-4.

Herbert and Cadman played solid defensively which set up for a Barons spike cutting the Presidents’ lead to two, 12-10

The Presidents persevered and won the fourth set 25- 22.

In the fifth set, Davis served an ace giving the barons a crucial four-point-lead over the presidents, 7-3.

The Barons continued to work together toward the end of the fifth set and killed the ball which made the score 13- 8.

The Barons won the fifth set 15- 9.

The Barons next home game is Nov. 4 at 1 p.m. against Thiel College in the Finnegan Fieldhouse where the Barons will celebrate senior honoring.
