The Franciscan University softball team fell to the Grove City College Wolverines 8-2 in the first game of its home doubleheader at 2 p.m. Thursday.
The Lady Barons started off the game slowly, failing to score in the first four innings. By the end of the fourth inning, they were behind the Wolverines by five points.
Franciscan turned up the heat in the fifth inning. Senior catcher Chloe Cross made a hit that helped the Lady Barons get a point on the board. This hit allowed freshman infielder Kimberly McDaniels to make a dash for home.
Senior outfielder Jenny Massey was also able to score on Cross’ play. This point was added after a runner’s interference call was made.
The Lady Barons were unable to score in the last two innings of the seven-inning game; they lost 8-2 against the Grove City Wolverines.
During the game, junior first-base Alexis McKnight went three for three with three singles to the outfield. McDaniels was also able to go three for three by drawing a walk. Cross got two hits and a lone run batted in.
In the second game of the afternoon doubleheader, the Lady Barons bested the Wolverines 5-4 in seven innings.
Head coach Chris McKnight said, “It was good to see our team fight through the adversity of losing the lead in the second game. (The Lady Barons) kept their competitive spirit, winning the game in the last inning.”
Also, McKnight said he is proud of sophomore pitcher Lilly Wahl.
“Lilly Wahl pitched a good game with her and the team deserving the win,” he said.
The Franciscan softball team will next play the Geneva College Golden Tornadoes at a home game Monday at 3 p.m.
