Lady Barons lacrosse claim first home victory 15-5

The Franciscan University of Steubenville women’s lacrosse team won its first home game of the 2021-2022 season 15-5 against the Heidelberg University Princes Friday at 5 p.m.

The Lady Barons got off to strong start and scored the first seven goals of the game. This gave them a huge lead over Heidelberg early on.

In the first quarter, senior attack Grace Deegan scored the first point for the Lady Barons unassisted. Graduate student midfield Annie King followed quickly with another goal unassisted.

Sophomore attack Joanna Hilkert scored the third and fourth goals. She received assistance from Deegan and freshman attack Katheryn Brehm. Deegan achieved the fifth, sixth and seventh goals with help from Hilkert.

The Lady Barons’ scoring slowed down in the second quarter, but they maintained their lead over Heidelberg. Freshman midfield Theresa Lyle and sophomore midfield Riley O’Brien scored goals unassisted. Sophomore midfield Mary Bohli also scored with assistance from Hilkert.

Franciscan got three more goals in the third quarter. Lyle scored a goal unassisted followed by unassisted goals by King and Deegan. Hilkert and Deegan both achieved unassisted goals in the fourth quarter.

The Lady Barons dominated over the Heidelberg University Princes with a final score of 15-5.

Notable moments from the game include Deegan scoring six goals. She is just two goals away from the second all-time goals scored record.

Hilkert achieved her second three-goal game for her career with the help of her hat trick. This game was the first game that Lyle scored multiple goals. Additionally, King had the most turnovers for the game with seven turnovers and four ground balls.

The Franciscan women’s lacrosse team will play La Roche College at a home game March 22 at 6 p.m.
