Lady Barons lacrosse falls 10-8 among inclement weather

The Franciscan University of Steubenville women’s lacrosse team lost to the Thiel College Tomcats 10-8 at its 1 p.m. home game Saturday amid rain, hail and high winds.

The Lady Barons started the game off strong. Senior attacker Grace Deegan scored the first goal of the game with about 10 minutes left in the first quarter.

About five minutes later, sophomore attacker Joanna Hilkert scored a second goal. Quickly after, Hilkert scored another goal with help from freshman attacker Katheryn Brehm. The Lady Barons finished the first period tied 3-3 with Thiel.

Deegan scored Franciscan’s first goal of the second period. Graduate student midfielder Annie King snagged two goals near the end of the first period. She received assistance from Brehm with the second goal.

Franciscan finished the second period up two points over Thiel.

Thiel had a run in the third quarter that the Lady Barons struggled to defend against. They lost their lead and ended the third period down by two points.

The Lady Barons rebounded slightly in the fourth period. Deegan scored the first goal of the fourth period unassisted; also, she scored the last game goal.

However, the Lady Barons did not regain a lead over Thiel and were defeated 10-8.

Notable game statistics included Deegan being the top-scorer of the game with four goals. King had the most caused turnovers of the game. Freshman goalie Rose Kane had 12 game saves.

The Lady Barons’ next game will be against the Washington and Jefferson College Presidents at a 5 p.m. home game Wednesday. Washington and Jefferson College is the defending Presidents’ Athletic Conference champion.
