The Franciscan University of Steubenville women’s lacrosse team was defeated by Ohio Northern University 12-9 in their season’s opening game Saturday at 1 p.m.
The Lady Barons fought hard throughout the game. Senior attack Grace Deegan led the Lady Barons in their charge.
In the first quarter, midfield graduate student Annie King scored the first goal for the Lady Barons for both the game and the 2021-22 season. Deegan went on to score a goal with about two minutes left in the first quarter. The first quarter ended with a score of 5-2, Ohio Northern in the lead.
About halfway through the second quarter, Deegan scored another goal. Sophomore midfield Riley O’Brien scored a goal soon after.
Then freshman midfield Theresa Lyle scored a goal with about five minutes left on the clock. The second quarter ended with a score of 8-5.
The Lady Barons picked up one goal in the third quarter. It was made by freshman attack Katheryn Brehm.
In the fourth quarter, King made a goal with assistance from sophomore midfielder Mary Bohli. Deegan then made a goal with assistance from O’Brien. In about the last three minutes of the fourth quarter, Brehm made a goal with assistance from sophomore defense and midfielder Christina Haug.
The Lady Barons’ fight was not enough, and Ohio Northern prevailed 12-9.
O’Brien had the highest number of shots this game with seven shots. Deegan scored a hat trick.
The Lady Barons will play next against the Marietta College Pioneers Wednesday at 3 p.m. in a home game. The Lady Barons have an all-time record of 1-0 against Marietta but have not played against them since 2019.
