The Franciscan University of Steubenville women’s lacrosse team lost to the Thiel College Tomcats 13-10 Saturday, April 11, at 12 p.m. at the Lady Baron’s senior honoring game.
The Lady Barons starters were junior midfield Annie King, junior attack Grace Deegan, freshman attack Joanna Hilkert, senior defense Margaret McKee, sophomore defense Mary Lou Lipovsky, senior attack Maria Hilkert, freshman midfielder Riley O’Brien, senior midfielder Maureen Cain, senior defense Maddy Smith, sophomore midfield Elizabeth Dudas, senior attack Blair Wonderly and senior goalkeeper Sam Callahan.
Before the game began, Coach Maura Carapellotti honored the eight graduating lacrosse players. Hilkert, Cain, Smith, Wonderly, Callahan, senior defense Abigail Schaefer and senior attack Teresa Dulac were honored.
In the first minutes of the first period, Wonderly scored unassisted for Franciscan and O’Brien scored quickly after with assistance from Deegan. Thiel then scored five consecutive goals.
At just under 20 minutes on the clock, Deegan broke Thiel’s streak with two goals for Franciscan, one unassisted and one with assistance from Cain.
Thiel scored again but the Lady Barons followed with four consecutive goals.
The first was scored by Deegan with assistance from Hilkert. The second was scored by King with assistance from Deegan. The third and fourth were scored by Wonderly, one unassisted and one with assistance from Deegan.
Thiel College scored again, then O’Brien scored unassisted for Franciscan. The first period ended closely with the Lady Barons in the lead 9-8.
Deegan scored again in the first minute of the second period with assistance from Hilkert. Thiel College followed with five consecutive goals.
The second period ended with a final game score of 13-10, and the Lady Barons fell to Thiel College.
The Lady Barons lacrosse team’s final home game will be Wednesday, April 14, at 7 p.m. against the Bethany College Bison.
