Franciscan University of Steubenville women’s lacrosse team played its last home game of the semester against the Waynesburg University Yellow Jackets Tuesday at 5 p.m. and won 19-5.

The Lady Barons began on top, grabbing the ball early on and scored five points within the first half hour. The coach called a break and the teams refreshed. The Lady Barons ran back onto the field and scored another pair of points.

Waynesburg began to pick up their game and scored for the first time of the night, to be immediately followed by a score by freshman midfielder Riley O’Brien. With no time to spare, O’Brien scored a second goal, to be quickly countered by Waynesburg in its second score of the night.

Freshman attack Natividad Cahill put an end to the ferocious back and forth and scored her very first goal of her college career. The team and the crowd cheered for her, making the victory the loudest part of the night. Shortly after, the Lady Barons scored their 11th goal.

In the second half of the game, the Lady Barons were still playing strong, and scored five times in a row.

Junior attack Grace Deegan scored her third and fourth goals of the night. At the very end of the game the Lady Barons were able to go out with a bang, scoring two final goals and leaving the score of the night at 19-5.

“Tonight was a solid team win for the Lady Barons,” said head coach Maura Carapellotti. “I was pleased to see the girls moving the ball quickly on transition into scoring opportunities. Defense was quick on their communication and slides to help, and our goalie had more saves than goals allowed.”

The Lady Barons will play at Westminster College this Saturday, April 24, at 4 p.m.
