Franciscan University improved their conference record today with 3-0 victory over the Medaille Mavericks. With today’s win the Barons are 4-1 in conference play and 9-5-1 for the season overall.

Between smart passes, good footwork, and well-designed shots at the goal it seems that the Barons’ good decision making is what led them to victory.

Head Coach Clare McBane commented on her team’s performance saying, “We knew coming into this that this was going to be a difficult game. They trained well, they worked really hard at practice the day before and took that and translated into the game today.”

The Barons outplayed the Mavericks on both sides of the ball by putting up a total of 26 shots at the goal and holding their opponent to only 11. Despite these impressive numbers, the Barons were only able to score on three out of those 26 attempts.

“Even in a game 3-0, if we had more opportunities there is still room to improve,” commented McBane, “And I’d like to see the defense kind of tighten up just a little bit. We had one or two scares in this game and I’d like to have zero.”

McBane plans on taking her comments to practice to get her team ready for their game against Hilbert on Oct. 18, but ultimately she is proud of the way her team played in such an aggressive matchup. With several minor injuries on the day and plenty of pushing and shoving, it was clear the game meant a lot to both teams.

“Both teams were competing for a high spot in conference, so it was automatically a physical game… I think the girls handled it well,” said McBane.

After today, the Lady Barons have their ninth win on the season and they hope to continue their success as they travel to Hilbert College next Saturday.
