The Franciscan University of Steubenville’s women’s soccer team defeated the Waynesburg University Yellow Jackets 2-1 in a close contest Wednesday, Sept. 18 in Steubenville, Ohio.
The sun was out Wednesday afternoon, and a crisp competitive aura came from the bleachers as the Lady Barons fought to bring their record one step closer to .500.
The Franciscan offense was focused as they put seven shots on net before the 40th minute; it seemed as if it was only a matter of time before one broke through. The Waynesburg keeper stood tall, protecting the back of the opposing team’s net as both teams ended the first half 0-0.
Only a minute into the second half of play, freshman forward Bella Rubino netted one goal unassisted to finally break the seal for the home team. The Lady Barons continued to roll, peppering the Waynesburg defense with a flurry of shots from every angle. In the 72nd minute, senior midfielder Sarah Cocozza buried a shot to push the lead to 2-0.
The Yellow Jackets responded to the growing lead by scoring a goal of their own in the 84th minute to make the score 2-1. The Franciscan defense worked to close the game and did so with poise.
“It’s satisfying,” said head coach Christyn Bobak, “when you come out here and put into action the many hours of work you’ve been putting in. It was a heart and soul win from the first to the last minute. What a satisfying win today was. Sarah Cocozza and Bella Rubino were offensive game changers today.”
The Lady Barons look to their next home game during homecoming weekend Saturday, Oct. 5, at 3 p.m. against Penn State Behrend.
