Lady Barons soccer ties Westminster College in final home game

The Franciscan University of Steubenville women’s soccer team tied with Westminster College 0-0 in the final home game of the season Saturday, April 18, at 10 a.m.

The Lady Barons starters were senior forward Marykate Bateman, senior defense Kaitlyn Martuch, senior midfield Claire Dawyot, sophomore midfield Emily Gerlach, senior midfield Sarah Cocozza, senior midfield Beth Flanagan, senior forward Kaitrin O’Leary, sophomore forward Bella Rubino, freshman midfield Juliana Rubino, sophomore midfield Ellie Scanlon and senior goalkeeper Marita Ostrich.

Before the game, the Lady Barons honored their eight senior players. These players included starters Bateman, Martuch, Cocozza, Flanagan, O’Leary and Ostrich. Senior midfield Annie Beckman and senior defense Sam Herbert were also honored.

In both the first and second half of the game neither team scored. The Lady Barons and Westminster played mostly in the middle of the field. The Lady Barons took four shots on the goal.

The game went into two overtimes. In the first overtime both teams played heavy defense with neither taking a shot.

In the second overtime, Cocozza took a shot from the 18-yard box. But the Westminster goalie made the save, maintaining a final score of 0-0.

Dawyot led the Lady Barons in shots taken, taking four shots. Cocozza was next for the Lady Barons with three shots, two of which were on goal. Ostrich had four saves on the goal.

Currently the Lady Barons have an overall win-loss-tie streak of 2-4-2. They are ranked fifth in the Presidential Athletic Conference.

The Lady Barons next game is Tuesday, April 21, at 7:30 p.m. at Geneva College.
