Franciscan University of Steubenville’s women’s basketball team lost to the Westminster Titans 90-60 Monday at 6 p.m. at the final home game of the season.
The game started with an eight-point lead for the Titans before sophomore point guard Selena Coronis made a bucket and put Franciscan on the scoreboard.
The Lady Barons picked up a better defense covering up the key during the end of the first quarter and closed it out with another bucket from Coronis 15 seconds before the buzzer sounded, bringing the score to 23-15, Titans.
The second quarter started strong with a bucket from sophomore guard Clare McGahan and a score from freshman guard Victoria Unnerstall shortly after.
Freshman forward Sophie LaRose made a 3-pointer and brought the score to 29-22.
Freshman guard Natalie Connor took a rebound as the Lady Barons slipped behind and McGahan completed a layup, putting the score at 40-27.
Unnerstall made a 3-pointer with 50 seconds left in the first half, but the Titans completed two 3-pointers before the buzzer, and the half ended 48-30, Titans.
The Lady Barons continued to slip behind in the third quarter but they kept up their side of the scoreboard with 3-pointers from Coronis and freshman guard Isabel Atendido and four consecutive points from freshman guard Ashley Benson.
The third quarter closed at 66-45 after the Titans made some baskets.
Unnerstall scored first for the Lady Barons in the fourth quarter, challenging the Titans’ accelerated pace. McGahan scored twice, maintaining the 20-point deficit for the Lady Barons.
Benson and Atendido both scored in the last minute of the game but the Titans stayed on top and won by 30 points, 90-60.
“It was a hard-fought battle and we were able to show some of our scoring ability,” said coach Sean Kirk. “Clare McGahan stepped up in a big way and to have double digit nights from her, Victoria Unnerstall and Sophie LaRose is big. We just need to lock down defensively. … It is a process and we are continuing to get better day in and day out.”
The Lady Barons played their season finale at Waynesburg University Tuesday at 7 p.m.
