The Lady Barons tennis team earned their second win of the season with a final score of 7-2 in their match against the Baldwin Wallace University Yellow Jackets at the Belleview Courts Friday.

The Lady Barons started off the match by winning all three of their doubles matches. The first point put on the board was by an 8-0 shutout by the Lady Barons’ junior Haley Davinsizer and senior Zoey Stapleton.

This win was followed by another from sophomore Susan Schuberg and junior Caroline Picard, who defeated the Yellow Jackets 8-5.

Finally, freshman Olivia Colby and sophomore Maria Herrera’s first round edged the Lady Barons forward with a score of 8-7. After an intense tiebreaker, the two were able to secure their victory with a final score of 7-4.

The Lady Barons entered into the six singles matches scheduled up by 3-0. Picard started off strongly for the Lady Barons with two decisive rounds, both at 6-0. Next, Schuberg played two strong rounds, at 6-1 and 6-0, to win the Lady Barons’ fifth point.

The next match to finish was a loss. Both rounds for Stapleton ended as 6-1 victories for the Yellow Jackets, marking the first point against the Barons for the day.

Colby retaliated for the Lady Barons with two winning matches at 6-3 and 6-2. Davinsizer brought in a win with two matches at 6-1 and 7-5. To end the evening, Herrera lost her match with two rounds at 6-1 and 6-4 respectively.

The Lady Barons beat Thiel College 8-1 on Thursday for their first win of the season. The team also took an earlier, nail-biting 5-4 loss on Sept. 1 at the hands of the University of Pittsburgh.

The Lady Barons also played two matches on Sept. 3 and 4 against West Liberty University that resulted in two losses for the Barons. The two-day event ended with a sweeping 30-0 singles and 14-1 doubles final scores, both wins for West Liberty. West Liberty University is an NCAA Division II, so the matches do not count against Franciscan, an NCAA Division III team.

The Lady Barons’ next home game will be Thursday Sept. 16 at 5:30 p.m. against Muskingum University at the Belleview Courts.
