Lady Barons volleyball falls to Grove City College

Franciscan University of Steubenville women’s volleyball fell to Grove City College 3-0 in their sixth game of the season Friday at 7 p.m.

Franciscan starters were junior outside hitter Renee Antonelli, freshman middle hitter Annika Olsen, junior outside hitter Maria Bosco, junior setter Emily Nutter, freshman setter Grace Wallace, junior defensive specialist Mary Kate Taylor and senior libero Lauren Betar.

In the first set, Antonelli and Nutter both scored kills, tying the first set score to 10. Grove City College went 5-0, stealing the lead. Antonelli and Taylor scored additional kills, but they could not take back the lead.

The first set ended 25-18 with Grove City in the lead.

Grove City took an early lead in the second set. Antonelli and Taylor both scored kills that inspired a 6-point gain by Franciscan. Nutter and Bosco had a big block that helped Franciscan capitalize on points.

But Grove City regrouped and won the second set 25-17.

Grove City took an early lead in the third set that Franciscan would not overcome. Franciscan put on a strong defensive effort, with Betar making 14 digs. Wallace, Antonelli and Taylor also played strong defense, each scoring nine digs. Grove City College won the third set 8-1.

Overall, The Lady Barons lost to Grove City 3-0.

Other notable numbers included Nutter recording 13 assists, six digs and five assists. Antonelli scored eight kills and nine digs. The Lady Barons currently have a 2-3 win-loss record.

The Lady Barons’ next game is at home against Bethany College Monday at 7 p.m.
