The Lady Barons volleyball team lost its second match of the day with a score of 3-1 against the Thiel College Tomcats Saturday at 3 p.m. in the Finnegan Fieldhouse.

In spite of the disappointing outcome of the first match that morning, a 3-0 loss against the Westminster Titans, the Lady Barons came with a fresh energy into their next game.

A fan in the stands repeatedly said, “Fire me up, Barons!” The enthusiastic chant set the crowd’s tone for the entire match. The crowd was tense as it watched the Lady Barons hustle their way through all four sets against the Tomcats.

The first point of the match was a kill from freshman right side Brynn Jacobson. Throughout the rest of the first set, the Tomcats dominated the court. The Lady Barons owed a handful of their points to errors by the Tomcats.

Two more kills, one by Brynn and another by senior middle hitter Caitlin O’Malley, were made for Franciscan at the end of the first set. However, the set ended with a 25-12 win for the Tomcats.

The Lady Barons returned for a much more energetic second set. Their presence on the court resulted in multiple kills and a 25-17 win for the Lady Barons, tying the overall score.

During the third set, senior setter Emily Nutter and senior middle hitter Maria Bosco successfully carried out a block, causing an attack error by the Titans and earning a point for the Lady Barons. Again, the set closed with a score of 25-17, this time favoring the Tomcats.

The Lady Barons lost to the Tomcats 25-20 in the deciding fourth set. Despite the loss, the Lady Barons continued to hustle through all four sets.

The Lady Barons’ next home match will be against the St. Vincent College Bearcats Tuesday at 7 p.m.
