Poetry Night

On Feb. 15 at 7 to 8:30pm in Pugliese Auditorium, the English Honors Society hosted a poetry night. The theme of the event was “Valentine’s and Extraterrestrial Cultural Appreciation.”

The English Honors Society has been around for more than 100 years, and members meet weekly to discuss books, their own writing, and other English-related topics.

Molly Blake, the chapter president, began the night with a reading of “Leda and the Swan” by W. B. Yeats.

Following Ms. Blake’s reading, John Paul Montgomery read an original poem he wrote earlier in the afternoon, titled “Mercurians,” which started his series of “free verse poem(s)… about aliens and love” for each of the planets in the solar system, including Pluto.

Mr. Montgomery also read “Trees” by Joyce Kilmer in “the voice of a Neptunian” and performed a “Neptunian folk dance.”

Other poems, including “Design” by Robert Frost and “Annabel Lee” by Edgar Allan Poe, were recited. Joseph M. recited a poem he had memorized, titled “Torch Songs” by Robert Wrigley.

Brothers Joe H. and Jeffery H. attended the event. Joe said the night was “enjoyable, though [he] wished there were more people.” Jeffery said that it was “fun” and “silly.”
