The Franciscan women’s soccer team was unable to complete the comeback in a 4-3 loss to the Grove City Wolverines. The match occurred Wednesday, Oct. 16 at 5 p.m. at home.

Following an incredible 9-0 victory on Senior Day, the Barons were hoping to continue their excellent play into this game. But Grove City has proven to be a difficult opponent in the past. The Wolverines are currently 1st in the PAC and the Barons are 2-7 against them all time.

As the kickoff sounded, Grove City immediately put pressure on the Franciscan defense. The Wolverines kept retaining possession of the ball and fired off multiple shots on goal. Senior goalkeeper Rebekka Dill got a save, but was unable to stop the onslaught. Ten minutes into the game, the Wolverines scored their first point.

The Barons were unfazed by the early deficit and quickly responded with a counterattack. Dill got two back-to-back saves and freshman forward Eva Dexter pushed the ball ahead with a long pass. The pass found sophomore midfielder Elise Winogradoff, who promptly smashed the ball into the back of the net. The game was tied at 1-1, but the Barons were not done yet.

Dexter continued to dominate on the offensive end and scored a goal of her own. The Barons ended the first half with a triumphant 2-1 lead.

Unfortunately, disaster struck in the second half. Six minutes into the second half, Grove City landed two quick goals, retaking the lead 3-2. The Wolverines kept putting pressure on the defense, giving the Barons barely any room to breathe. They earned some extra insurance with their fourth goal of the game.

But the Barons weren’t done yet. Eighty-two minutes into the game, Dexter scored her second goal of the night, making the deficit only one point. Despite their valiant efforts, the Barons were unable to complete the comeback.

This was the Baron’s last regular season game at home. They will play their last three games away, their next one being against Waynesburg on Saturday, Oct. 19 at 6 p.m.
