Soldiers Under Command Medieval Melee Tournament

Soldiers Under Command household hosted their first-ever Medieval Melee Tournament on Friday, February 13 at 6:30 p.m. until around 8:45-9:00 p.m.

Many students gathered to fight in the JC Williams Center wearing homemade knight costumes. Some even brought their own weapons.

Students gathered on the second level of the JC to watch the event, cheering as they watched.

During the event, Soldiers Under Command played epic fight music for each round.

Margaret McAuley, 21, an English writing major, said when asked what brought her to the event, “In all honesty I just wanted to watch people hit each other; I’d thought it be fun.”

Guinivere Barkett, 24, another English writing major and McAuley’s friend, was also there for similar reasons.

Ian Hoover, 21, a theology and history double major, participated in the tournament under the name Sir Johann von Hoberreich.

Hoover said that he studies medieval history and that “when I heard that I get to fight like a knight, I just thought that this is something that I definitely want to sign up for. I’ve also been sword fighting all year for the fun of it and I’ve beat a few people.” Hoover achieved fourth place overall.

Helena Sicree, 20, a psychology major, was the winner of the tournament. When asked about how she felt when winning one of the rounds she said that “It was quite fun– quite exhilarating, but I am not going to get my hopes up, there are a lot of good fighters out there.”

Jack DuPont, 22, a history major and member of Soldiers Under Command household, said that “as long as (our) household still stands, we plan to continue this, or events similar to this, in the future.”

“We wanted to do something big, fun,” said DuPont and remarked that they were “encouraged by Fr. Rufino to be creative.”
