Students put their knowledge to the test and competed in a spirited trivia night hosted by Franciscan Brother Peter David Hoyer, T.O.R., in the J.C. Williams Center atrium on Friday night. Brother Hoyer announced that the top winner would receive a steak dinner with him and his friend.
Enthusiastic shouting, upbeat music, lively chatter and the aroma of food filled the air, creating an energetic atmosphere throughout the competition. Students enjoyed a variety of refreshments, including fried ravioli, jalapeño poppers, pretzel sticks with dip and other finger foods. Attendees over 21 were also offered two complimentary drinks, with a selection of wine and beer available.
The main event featured eight rounds of trivia covering a wide range of categories. Each team received a blank answer sheet to record their responses. Categories included science, geography, music, films, viral Vine references, logo identification, Catholic-themed “Price Is Right” questions and various other topics.
Teams ranged from one to 10 members, filling both the first and second floors of the J.C. Williams Center. After each round, teams exchanged answer sheets to grade each other’s responses, determining winners for each round.
While some students participated in just a round or two, many stayed for the entire two-and-a-half-hour event, which concluded around 9:30 p.m. The night began with two warm-up rounds before increasing in difficulty.
At the end of the night, final scores revealed a tie between two teams: “The Holy Rollers” and “JP and Margaux.” The tie-breaker challenge involved transferring marshmallows with a straw, with the number of marshmallows moved determining the number of raffle tickets earned.
Freshman biology major Margaux Santos emerged as the overall winner after claiming victory in the raffle.
“I had a fun time,” Santos said. “It was such a nice time to relax with friends, and I wasn’t even coming to win. I was just going to have a good time, so this was honestly, like, a great bonus.”
