Women’s Basketball Breaks Records & Men’s Take Down Chatham

Finnegan Fieldhouse saw exciting matchups on Wednesday, Feb. 11 where both the Barons’s Men and Women’s Basketball teams faced off against PAC rival, the Chatham Cougars.

The night opened with the women’s game. Coached by Iliana Spoelman, their loss was tempered by graduate student #24 Jazzlyn Melnyk breaking two career records.

Before the start of Melnyk’s penultimate home game, she was only three rebounds away from becoming the all-time program leader. She easily topped the record board, recording 14 rebounds on the 11th. The feat gave her 261 rebounds this season alone and a career total of 865.

But Melnyk did not stop there. She stepped on the court needing nine points to reach her 1000 points milestone and did just that. Her final shot of the game in the fourth quarter was the three pointer to give her the nine she was looking for.

Melnyk also led her team as the leading point producer with three of her teammates scoring just three points below her.

The men’s game was just as exciting. With 297 fans attending, the gym was ready for the match up between the PAC Southern Division #2 Cougars and #4 Barons. Earlier in the season, Chatham had defeated the Barons by 2 points in a very close game.

But Feb.11 looked different. Each team had exactly 67 possessions, but the lead changed 10 times before the Barons decided enough was enough. Down by three at the half, the Men’s team dug deep and began to run the floor.

With #11 Zach Oliver leading the point production with his 17 points, the Barons defeated the Cougars for the second time in program history with a final score of 77:56.
